Apr. 05, 2019 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
We are meeting this week at the Halifax North Memorial Public Library. Our speaker be Sarah Ziolkowska, the Youth Librarian, who will be speaking to Halifax Harbourside Rotary about supporting their program providing kids at the library with stigma-free healthy snacks.
Staff at the Halifax North Memorial library have noticed kids are coming to the library hungry, and can spend hours or a full day there without eating. Behavioural issues sometimes arise from kids being hungry and feeling unwell. Although there are several service providers and free meals in the area for adults, these do not meet the needs of the youth that attend the library. The library has been providing stigma-free healthy snacks along with food literacy everyday to support the health and wellness of the kids. These efforts have been extremely popular, and have helped kids participate in programs as well as provide peace of mind to parents and families. The library's current grant to support the healthy snacks program expired at the end of February 2019.
Location for this Friday's meeting:
Halifax North Memorial Public Library, 2285 Gottingen Street
There is parking at the back on Maitland Street, but you have to walk around to the front door on Gottingen to get in.
Please bring your own coffee/tea/snacks. (Eating is allowed at the library!) Doors will open at 7 AM with normal meeting times.

The Bus Stop Theatre is a multi-configurable performance venue located on Gottingen St in north end Halifax. Through its rental operations, the Bus Stop Theatre serves a wide range of artistic and community interests. Its affordable rental rates make it a crucial piece of infrastructure for both emerging and established artists and also a regular venue for many community events. The Bus Stop Theatre also runs educational and showcasing programs that help develop the skills and careers of local emerging talent.
Sebastien Labelle, Executive Director of the Bus Stop Theatre Cooperative, will present plans to secure a future for what has become an essential community hub and arts incubator in north end Halifax. After serving artists and community organizations for 16 years, the Bus Stop Theatre's future is in jeopardy due to the potential sale of the building housing it. The cooperative managing the theatre has developed a business plan for the acquisition of the theatre and the expansion of its facilities to include a new second performance space and additional rehearsal studios with a continued mandate to serve emerging artists and underserved communities.

Ribfest Debrief (July 19) - A preliminary debrief and discussion about Ribfest 2019, Halifax Harbourside Rotary's primary fundraiser. We have some new(ish) things to talk about, e.g. the 50/50 tickets were new this year, Easter Seals was our gate partner collecting donations, etc. Like good Nova Scotians though, we're going to talk about the weather. We had cool temperatures and a lot of rain over the Canada Day weekend this year, which affected Ribfest attendance and beverage sales. This debrief will start us toward a good understanding of 2019-20 financials and plans. ---------------------------------------------------------- We are a diverse and welcoming group, and we’d be honoured if you joined us.
