The Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside was established in 1989 and today is a vibrant Club of 60+ members, representing a broad range of backgrounds and professions.  As a group, we are committed to doing good locally and internationally, to personal and professional growth and development, and to having fun in everything we do.

Like all Rotary Clubs throughout the world, our Club's principal motto is Service Above Self.  Rotary organizes projects around Five Avenues of Service – Club [capacity], Vocational, Community, International, and Youth – to ensure service efforts are balanced and effective. Our Club's approach to service projects is to reflect our members’ passions in the projects that we pursue.  We ask our members "What would you like to accomplish through Rotary?" and go from there.

Our service projects are many and varied: To see a list of our projects, browse the "Service Programs" drop-down menu.
  • We do larger multi-year projects like partnering with Hospice Halifax and St. George's YouthNet and have partners with whom we have done several projects in different years (The Themba Project in South Africa and the Father Tony / Pa Modou Hub in the Gambia).
  • Each year we also also start new projects that are brought to us by Club members - for example, the Club began supporting Halifax Connects because a new member said this was an important event that we should support.
Our Club provides funds to our partners, but we believe we are at our best when we are directly engaged so, as much as possible, we engage as volunteers with the groups we support.

To fund our service projects, we conduct some smaller fundraisers (low effort) and 2 major fundraisers - our Mother's Day Brunch and the Halifax Ribfest.  All our fundraisers have to be fun and provide good returns, and we focus on "pull" fundraisers that draw people.

Mother's Day Brunch 2016 was the 25th Anniversary for this event and every year it is a terrific family feel-good event that represents probably the best special occasion brunch value in Halifax. Ribfest was a terrific project in its first year in Summer 2015 and an ever bigger success in 2016 and 2017 when we moved the event to coincide with Canada Day.

Our Club meets Fridays at 7:15 am at The Westin and the 3rd Tuesday at 5:30 pm (at Humani-T Cafe). Our meetings are informative and entertaining, with around 35 members and guests at most meetings. We also organize regular social events (one time a member hosted members to share a traditional Ukrainian Christmas, another time members went Tidal Bore Rafting), several members participate in Rotary-affiliated activities together (IWK Carpentry Workshop, chorale singing, and motorcycle touring), and more.
